Secret key storage

Greetings,

While trying to add backwards compatibility to PGP 2.0 for GnuPG 2.0,
I'm beginning to bang my head against a wall. Some of the discussion can
be found at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159870 , but trying
to sum things up, the effort so far only works whenever the secret key
is not password protected (and hence encrypted).

I tried to manually set the s2k cipher algo to CAST5 using gnupg 1.4.6
to be sure that wasn't the problem itself, but that didn't result in any
change.

The key has the following attributes:

Old: Secret Key Packet(tag 5)(492 bytes)
        Ver 3 - old
Public key creation time - Fri Jan 5 00:55:53 CET 2007
Valid days - 0[0 is forever]
Pub alg - RSA Encrypt or Sign(pub 1)
        RSA n(1024 bits) - ...
        RSA e(5 bits) - ...
        Sym alg - CAST5(sym 3)..

Is there any obvious reason why an RSAv3 key would only work when not
being password protected, that I'm overlooking?

Your's sincerely
