Detached signatures

Hi,
I would like to suggest an improvement for detached signatures. When I sign 
a file with "gpg --detach-sign filename.txt" I get the output 
"filename.sig" . Then I have to change the output filename to 
"filename.txt.sig" to be able to check the signature with "gpg --verify 
filename.txt.sig"  (If I use "gpg --verify filename.sig" I get an error 
because gpg cannot find the signed file.)

Why not always keep the original filename and just add .sig when signing?
