recv-keys weirdness?

What does this mean:

samosa{jgg}~/keys#gpg --no-options --batch --load-extension rsa
--no-default-keyring --always-trust --keyring ./extrakeys.gpg --keyserver
18.43.0.48 --recv-keys 0x2D527E31
gpg: requesting key 2D527E31 from 18.43.0.48 ...
gpg: key 2D527E31: no valid user IDs
gpg: this may be caused by a missing self-signature
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: w/o user IDs: 1
samosa{jgg}~/keys#gpg --keyring ./extrakeys.gpg --fingerprint 0x2D527E31
gpg: error reading key: public key not found

Surely gpg isn't not importing the key because it doesn't have a
self-signed ID?
