Just to nitpick here, I think you mean the incompatibilities of *X.509* are
huge.  Compatibility between S/MIME implementations is actually quite good.
S/MIME doesn't require X.509 (I've been doing it with PGP keys for several
years now), so it's not a deadly failing.
