--default-sign with ! syntax (selecting primary key) doesn't work?

Yo!
Version: gnupg 1.2.1-2 (Debian pkg)
self compiled, so it's not a libc6 transition issue (you know what I
mean if you follow Debian's development)
gpg@altfrangg:~/web/legal$ gpg --list-secret-key

gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available

Replacing secring.gpg with a secring.gpg containing only the primary
secret key, it works:
gpg@altfrangg:~/.gnupg$ gpg --list-secret-keys
/home/gpg/.gnupg/secring.gpg

You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
user: "Adrian von Bidder <avbidder@fortytwo.ch>"
1024-bit DSA key, ID 92082481, created 2002-02-22

Known problem, or do I misunderstand how the ! syntax is supposed to
work?
cheers
