--default-sign with ! syntax (selecting primary key) doesn't work?

Yo!

Version: gnupg 1.2.1-2 (Debian pkg)
self compiled, so it's not a libc6 transition issue (you know what I
mean if you follow Debian's development)

gpg at altfrangg:~/web/legal$ gpg --list-secret-key
/home/gpg/.gnupg/secring.gpg
----------------------------
sec 1024D/5E4B731F 2002-02-25 Adrian von Bidder <avbidder at acter.ch>
uid Adrian von Bidder <avbidder at fortytwo.ch>
ssb 1024g/D1FAFD69 2002-02-25

sec 1024D/92082481 2002-02-22 Adrian von Bidder <avbidder at fortytwo.ch>
ssb 1024g/08C279D8 2002-02-22
ssb 1024D/BDDF997A 2002-08-21
ssb 1024D/E5A7F7D6 2002-08-22

gpg at altfrangg:~/web/legal$ gpg --default-key \!92082481 --clearsign
policy.20030129
gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available
gpg: policy.20030129: clearsign failed: secret key not available

Replacing secring.gpg with a secring.gpg containing only the primary
secret key, it works:

gpg at altfrangg:~/.gnupg$ gpg --list-secret-keys
/home/gpg/.gnupg/secring.gpg
----------------------------
sec 1024D/92082481 2002-02-22 Adrian von Bidder <avbidder at fortytwo.ch>

gpg at altfrangg:~/web/legal$ gpg --clearsign policy.20030129
gpg: no secret subkey for public subkey 08C279D8 - ignoring
gpg: no secret subkey for public subkey BDDF997A - ignoring
gpg: no secret subkey for public subkey E5A7F7D6 - ignoring

You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
user: "Adrian von Bidder <avbidder at fortytwo.ch>"
1024-bit DSA key, ID 92082481, created 2002-02-22

Known problem, or do I misunderstand how the ! syntax is supposed to
work?

cheers
