That's odd.  So you say the configure that came with 1.2.2 didn't
work, and you regenerated it with that copy of autoconf, and then it
did work?

Hmm.  Does the diff between the original configure and your new
configure show anything interesting?  If I run autoconf here, I get
the exact same configure as the distributed one.
