i must've not made myself clear....

i mean that if compression is done outside of gpg like this:
 	$ date | gzip | gpg -ear {key_id}
or
 	$ date | gzip | gpg --compress-algo 0 -ear {key_id}

it will produce a message that, when decrypted, will produce gibberish. 
gibberish in, gibberish out.

still, my desire is to see what algorithm gpg is using to de/encrypt the 
message by use of the "--verbose" flag.
