Error while checking gpg sig in pgp

I've been misunderstanding something here, it seems.

GPG reports a message "you can only make detached or clear signatures while in --pgp2 mode, this message may not be usable by PGP2.x"

I've been trying to sign the text in the textfile with GPG using
gpg -s filename
and I have the pgp2 option set in my gpg.conf file (I've also tried to add it to the command line with no difference)

Is a message signed in GPG using the -s or --sign flag not verifiable using PGP2.x? According to the message above, it looks like PGP2.x can only verify GPG signed messages if they're clearsigned or detached-signed, but no if they're -s signed.

By the way, thanks for the help.
