--status-fd pipe and select

I realise that similar questions have been asked
before, but after much googling I can't work out the
answer.

If using --status-fd 1, --command-fd 0 and calling gpg
using popen (I'm doing this from python, but AFAIKS
it's only a thin wrapper around the library), select
correctly reports that the stdout pipe is ready for
reading once gpg has terminated. In other words, if
using the edit key functions, it is not possible to
use select to be sure that a read will not block.

Is this inevitable, or could gpg become more 'select'
friendly?

Best wishes,

N.
