strange behavior for --edit-key passwd

O.K. I've discovered that this behavior shows up only after installing
the GNUwin32 project's Readline 5.0 files into my MinGW/MSYS build
environment. For some reason, only dynamic builds find and link to
readline, and when used, this strange behavior shows up. I removed
readline from the build environment and compiled a new set of
dynamically linked binaries, which then behaved normally.
