smartcard use with sylpheed-claws

Hi,

unfortunately, my beloved mail reader sylpheed-claws does not work with
smartcards. 

The problem seems to be that the PIN request is not working;
sylpheed-claws simply does not ask for a PIN at the point where it
usually requests the passphrase. Then, it concludes that no valid
passphrase was entered and refuses to process the mail.

Sylpheed-claws uses GPGME for GPG integration. 

How could this problem be
fixed?
