There's an old adage: use the right tool for the job.  If you're worried
about someone doing serious forensic recovery of your hard drive, then
invest in full-volume encryption.  TrueCrypt and PGPDisk are two popular
and well-reputed options: the former is open-source software, while the
latter has source available.

Disk shredders do not work -- more to the point, they _cannot_ work.
