after successful compilation: how to install safely in a test environment parallet to existing production version

After having successfully compiled the GPG developer version
(configure.., make),
I did *not* make install

I found gpg2 in the subdirectory /g10/gpg2 of the compiled sources

gpg2 -c foo.txt
NOTE: THIS IS A DEVELOPMENT VERSION
...
/usr/local/bin/gpg-agent: probably not installed

Question:
=======
Is there a way for a safe installation (and later deinstallation)
of the developer version and tools like gpg-agent
*/
    in parallel to the existing gpg installation on that server ?
/*
If yes, how ?
Can please add such information to your documentation or Wiki?
