Support for SmartCard-HSM

Dear GnuPG developers,

we're currently evaluating the feasibility to add support for the
SmartCard-HSM [1] to GnuPG/scdaemon.

So far we've been able to set up the development environment and start
to work on the scdaemon driver for the card.

Apparently scdaemon has support for the OpenPGP card and some other card
types. However gpg with --card-status and --card-edit seems to only
support the OpenPGP card.

Is it true, that other card types can only be used for gpgsm ?
