Damien has also still looked into it, and it seems to work. I didn't try yet 
my self.

For the debug env, it's basically an apache ssl/tls setup with client auth. 

Just for info, for the pki: in case you setup a test-ce using xca + openssl 
1.0.1i, there is a patch here to make it work: 
http://sourceforge.net/p/xca/patches/14/  

I can still provide more details in the course of the week, if required.
