why does pinentry embed libassuan?

i'm in reviewing the build process for pinentry (curses, gtk-2, qt4),
and i notice that they're all embedding libassuan.
for platforms like debian that have a system version of the assuan
dynamic library available, is there a reason for using this embedded
version?
