I think you mean that doing "gpg --card-status" is required to
have the shadowed private key in .gnupg/private-keys-v1.d.
Or by "gpg", do you mean different version of GnuPG (1.4 or 2.0)?
Yes, for those versions, it is required to associate keys
on smartcard and .gnupg/seckey.gpg.
