We do this on Windows since the very beginning and I am glad that we can
eventually can get rid of it due to a new API in Windows-7.  Adding one
to Unix makes me sad.  However, for non-Linux a wrapper might be the
most portable solution (and it would also help to get rid of a
double-fork problem)
