I've made some progress...

Problem #2 Update

My friend's system seems to think the datestamp for my sig is 0:00:00
1/1/1970, which I'm guessing is why it's failing to verify.  I'm guessing
this is a bug with his PGP (it was v6 not 7) not being compliant with
OpenPGP.

Problem #3 Update

It turns out the extra certificates came from me (whew!) when I deleted
one of my UIDs and recreated them.  Which doesn't totally explain why he
can't sign my key, but I'll put that down to a problem on the far side of
his human-computer interface :-)

Still stumped about problem #1, though.
