Conversion between X509 certificates and gpg keys

I don't know much details from the public key certificates described in the
X509 standard that most browsers support. Do they also use RSA and/or
ElGamal?

I'm asking because I would like to know if gpg keys can be uniquely
converted to them and vice versa. That would prevent one from having to
generate a separate X509 key if it were usefull, like for secure websites,
but convert a gpg key to a certificate and use that. That would prevent
one from the need to create several keys.
