Hi there, Julia A. Case,

On 02 July 2001, I received the following message from you regarding
"Using gpg with Outlook/Outlook Express"

> I have a few users of my system that use Outlook/Outlook Express for their mailers,
> they have NO interest in using the linux machine and something like mutt/pine to
> read thier email... Is there anyway that I can make gpg (which seems to have a
> win32 port) work with these mailers? Mainly so they can sign/verify email, but
> occassionaly encrypt... It seems that the PGP people have some support for this,
> but we like to support open standards.
Because GnuPG is a commandline program, and there is no plug-in available for any mailer in Windows, you will have to use one of the GnuPG front ends, GnuPGShell or WinPT. GnuPGShell is more mature and looks very like PGPtray, but it lacks the "Current Window" option of PGP; it is free for use but not OpenSource. WinPT is very much in development, but it is OpenSource and contains various facilities not found in GnuPGShell. The PGP-Basics group has a number of documents on setting up GnuPG with Windows at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PGP-Basics Whilst I can understand your wish to make OE and Outlook GnuPG compatible, they are the most insecure programs available and the cause of most virus propogation in Windows; even having them on your system is tempting fate! I would suggest total deleting these and getting an e-mail program that is secure. There are two feature rich, secure mainstream e-mail programs which come with a GnuPG plugin, Becky!2 and The Bat, though you will need a front end for key management, setting up the options file, etc. For what its worth this is signed with the Becky!2 plug-in, so its pretty seamless in operation.
