No, it used an own algorithm, BassOmatic, but unfortunately it proved
to be flawed.

Would it? If someone would write GnuPG plugins for the BassOmatic cipher
of pgp 1 and an MD4 hash plugin, would GnuPG then be able to decrypt and
verify pgp 1.0 messages? What I see from the pgp 1 documentation is that
the basic structure (pubkey algo to encrypt session key of symm algo) did
not change since pgp 1.0.
