If Linus and crew make a minor change to the Linux kernel, I could
download all several MB of the new kernel. Instead, Linus runs a program
called "diff" which compares the original code to the new code and
generates a file that lists the changes in such a way that the file can be
used later by the "patch" utility to convert the original code to the new
code.

So instead of downlaoding a complete set of source code, I can just
download the patch and apply it the the original code that I already have
on hand.
