Good morning from California.
Although GnuPG does have the ability to use
conventional password encryption, it's design
is really intended for "public key"
cryptography.
In public key cryptography, each of the users
has his own keyset -- a public key that is to
be shared widely, and a private key that is to
be kept absolutely and strictly secret. The
public key is used to encrypt messages for
reading by the person who has the matching
private key.
For instance, at the bottom of this message
is my public key. If you were to create a
file containing all the text between and
including the -----BEGIN and -----END
lines, you could import that file into your
keyring (by typing:
gpg --import <filename>
from the command line) then you could use
my key to encrypt a message only I could
decrypt:
gpg -a -o <encrypted filename> -r Leigh --encrypt <filename>
This is the method of encrypting that will
allow the text of the encrypted file to be pasted
into an e-mail.
When I receive the e-mail, I'll type:
gpg --decrypt <filename>
