While it would be easy to add another user ID using a hex editor on
his key, you can't create a self-signature without his secret key.
Without a self-signature, GPG will (rightly) complain whenever you
try to use the key. My advise would be to alert your friend to the
issue, and have him add his new user ID to the key. (If he uses
GPG/PGP with people other than you, they're likely to be experiencing
the same problem.) Then, he can either upload the key to a keyserver
(so that you can download it) or get it to you by e-mail, etc.
