Elgamal signatures

That might be true for a single signature.  Consider the case if
most folks are using ElGamal signatures and GnuPG has to verify 20 or
30 signatures under a key - that will be slow.  DSA is already slow but
with ElGamal signatures my P300 Laptop works for a little eternity.
