Encryption with expired key?

If that keys works with PGP it is a bug in PGP.  The owner of the key
decided that the key should expire after 2003-03-12 and thus a
conforming implementation should not allow to override this.

It doesn't matter whether the expiration time of the subkey has not
yet expired.  Please ask the owner to change the epiration time - PGP
should allow for this.
