What is the minimum knowledge to use gpg?

I have a suspicion (unverifiable) that few people
actually signature-check these subscription or
newsgroup lists.
I carefully pasted Carl Gilbert's message on a
text file. Sent it to me and had enigmail check
it: answer: bad signature.
Did it twice to be sure.
