If you can, I would suggest DBAN:

I don't have much experience with wiping/secure deleting but looking
at several list and sites this was a frequently cited tool.

Can anyone comment on its effectivenes or other tools to do this ?
DBAN is OS independent, it creates a CD / Floppy that boots a smal
distribution that wipes any HD found.
