That calculation did not seem right, but I guess it is. By analogy with

A year of days is between 8 and 9 bits, and I think you would need a
collection of about 2^4.5 people to have a better-than-50% chance of
collision.
IIRC, it takes about 23 people to get that 50% chance. 2^4.5 is 22.6274
on my dinky calculator.
