what user owns the cron job?

what user owns the keyring?

if they're not the same, you could create problems.

assuming that the cron job is being run by "root" and the keyring is owned
by "simon"... root's gpg process will see that the keyring is owned by
another user. the solution is to import the public keys you need into
root's keyring, and then you may (or may not) need to specify
     "--homedir ~root/.gnupg/".
