if you use "-v" or "--verbose" you will see what algo the message is being 
encrypted to:

 	$ echo test | gpg -v -ear smasher
 	<<snip>>
 	gpg: RSA/TWOFISH encrypted for: "0x84E5717C Atom Smasher <atom at smasher.org>"
 	<<snip>>
