Why not use a hardware solution, so it sits underneath the OS
entirely? Seagate makes a new laptop drive that has built-in
encryption functionality. A number of vendors make hardware encryption
interfaces that work a the IDE or USB level (the USB devices are
usually external enclosures).

All problems can be solved by diplomacy, but violence and treachery
are equally effective, and more fun.
