errors in manual

The pseudo variables used to be printed bold by using a backspace and
printing again.  That was removed using

  sed $(printf "s/\b.//g")

but that won't work for the new underlined markup.  I'll change it to

  sed `printf "s/_\b//g;s/\b.//g"`
