OpenOffice uses XML-DSig, not S/Mime.

The PDF Format uses PKCS#7, not S/Mime. 

XML-DSig, PKCS#7 and S/Mime are all using X.509 certificates.
(And even CMS, but I haven´t seen that one in practice yet)
