Thanks for the hint.  After a bit of trial and error, I installed the
following packages (the `tetex-extra' transitional package is not
currently installable but individual `texlive' packages are):

  texlive-latex-base
  texlive-generic-recommended
  texlive-fonts-recommended

And it all works fine!
