Sorry I didn't get any notification from this thread, I haven't been able to reproduce the issue at all.

As you mention earlier in the thread, I also don't the presence of a `%n` in GnuTLS (or VLC for that matter) is relevant. My understanding is that GNUlib uses %n as a fallback to compute a correct return value on some systems, so it will issue a printf like call with a `%n`, regardless of the format string passed to it.
