It is informative to others and it's the central point for GNU releases. I can only refer to my experience from other projects - people (automatically) scan that mailing list and not version tags in a repo (well, maybe some do).

I saw the FSF making monthly summaries of new releases as well... where should they the the information from if not from the ML ?
