fwiw: I have an experimental branch of nettle with mini-gmp.c respecting `old_size` at https://gitlab.com/tobhe/nettle/-/tree/freesize

I think getting this working won't be too hard but we should probably consult with upstream gmp to check what they think. AFAIU nettle syncs their mini-gmp.c from gmp with each release.
