Hmm, right, I didn't do my homework properly and didn't check but this issue is not present if you rely on "make check" since the env vars are properly set. Sorry for the noise.

I should also have given more context. This is in the Debian/Ubuntu package: unfortunately, since the test environment is defined in a Makefile.am file, it's not accessible without running configure which makes it difficult to integrate. However I think I see a way since tests/Makefile.am is almost compatible with make.

Anyway, I think this is getting too far from the upstream code and approach and it seems unlikely you change the testsuite so it can be called outside of a configured and built tree since that would be quite a lot of work. I'll close this. Sorry again for the noise.
