Thank you @jas for your explanation! Unfortunately, we don't use OpenSSL in our projects (which appear to fail with the above). We do use `mbedTLS`, though, and it seems to ignore the protocol violation just as you say. We also use `curl` and it behaves the same as `mbedTLS` (not sure if it's built on top of that library). The same behavior is observed with `lwp-request` (it seems to be `perl`-based, but again I'm unsure what's the underlying TLS implementation). So we had a 3 to 1 situation, which to us looked like a GNUTLS bug -- and which is why I filed this bug report, even though I had a hunch that it might be related to the connection termination.
