<p dir="auto">Not sure if atomic is enough. It just makes a read-modify-write atomic. E.g. it doesn't help if one thread  reads the variable several times and another thread modifies it at the same time. Modern compiler optimization helps a lot (reading just once and keeping the value in a register), but you can't rely on it.</p>
