<li>restore <code>$abs_top_builddir</code> to just those test subdirs that currently rely on it indirectly</li>

<li>resolve and cache abspath at script-sourcing time; leave a comment prescribing to source it before changing directory</li>

<li>use <code>$top_builddir</code> (current MR's state) + leave a comment in the sourced file to not change directory when calling functions</li>

</ol>
