Could it be that the LOCALEDIR path is causing problems?  It seems like
it is terminated with a \ thereby escaping the " after it.

How did you invoke ./configure?  Maybe you could avoid all trailing '/'
or '\' in paths.

If that doesn't solve it, please send the config.log and ./configure
output.
