configure error message

Hi all,
This is the error message I get when I run ./configure to do the install
for the gpa program. 
checking for GTK -version >= 1.2.1 no 
the gtk-config script installed by GTK not found
if GTK was installed in PREFIX make sure PREFIX/bin is in your path or
set the GTK_CONFIG enviornment variable to the full path to gtk-config
configure: error: cannot find GTK+: ls gtk-config in executable path ?
I`m running mandrake 7.1 if that helps.
