I may change the API related to date and time.  Using time_t is not
optimal because on 32 bit boxes we get into problems in 2038 and I
have not managed to take my plan for a libxtime any further.  Maybe I
am simply going to use strings with ISO dates - they are not scalar
and thus the caller needs to free tthe string buffer.

I have not made any decision, though.  And will be a minor API change
which does not need too large changes on the caller's side.
