In our case it is a mere compatibility problem between OpenSSL and the
GPL. So I am confident that this may eventually be solved.
However the general principle of indirect linking could also be
carried over to a free (say new BSD license) library which in turn
links to a proprietary library (say to implement some DRM). In this
case it is pretty clear that this will be a way to limit the freedom
granted by the GPLed software. And thus violates the intention as
well as the actual terms of the GPL.
