I have GPG 0.9.8 on an Alpha (Linux), [VERY speedy :)) ] and generating
keys takes a while here too. I think it's partly because of the entropy
(randomness) needed, and partly because of the sheer size of the keys.
Personally, I think the security is worth the time.
