A little problem with german-umlaut.

Hallo

I'm using gpg-1.0.4 and I have a little problem with the german-umlaute.
The environment-varable LANG is set to de_DE and gpg shows me the german
messages. But instead of showing me the umlaut-characters, it shows me a
"?".

Any ideas how I could fix this problem?
No, I've not disabled nls.
I build it just the way "configure -> make -> make install".
